I Ching · Book of Changes

Chapter 48

Hexagram 48 · Jing · The Well

King Wen, Duke of Zhou, Confucius · Western Zhou (c.1000 BCE)

The Well: the town changes, but the well does not. No loss, no gain. They come and go. If the rope almost reaches the water but doesn't, and the jug breaks — misfortune. 1. Muddy well — not drunk. Old well — no animals. 2. Well-hole shoots at minnows — the jug is broken and leaks. 3. Well cleaned — yet not drunk. My heart is sad. Could draw water — if the king were clear. 4. Well lined. No blame. 5. Clear, cold well-spring — drink. 6. Well's rope is drawn up — do not cover. Sincerity: supreme good fortune.
